INTRODUCTION OF TAIWAN FASTENER INDUSTRY

INTRODUCTION OF TAIWAN INDUSTRIAL FASTENER INSTITUTE

It has been 40 years since Taiwan launched into its name of fastener supply center. In the south of Taiwan Chun Yu took the lead to establish its production lines. And in the north it was Universal fastener. The two companies have not only played the roles of pioneers of Taiwan fastener industry but also have educated tremendous numbers of experienced practitioners in the business. Most of the leaders of fastener industry in Taiwan are more or less related to the two companies.

TIFI ESTABLISHED IN 1969 AND NOW HAVING 627 MEMBERS:

Seeing the fast growth of fastener industry Chun Yu, Yung-Feng, Jta Yih, Sanshing, Lu Chu Shin Yee, Kwo-Feng, Universal and Chu Nan together proposed to establish Taiwan Industrial Fastener Institute (TIFI) and the president of Yung Feng Mr. Chiang Ta-Fa was nominated to be the 1st charman. At that stage there were only 32 members. After 40 years TIFI owns 627 members now Mr. Joe Chen of SAINTEC ENTERPRISE CO.,LTD. is now the chairman of TIFI.

50% OF THE MEMBERS COME FROM KAOHSIUNG AREA:

Most of the fastener manufacturers are located in Taipei and Kaohsiung areas. In Taipei there are more smaller fastener manufacturers as it is more difficult to get proper lands. But in Kaohsiung area you find much more factories in large scale. Numbers of the manufacturers are also more. For the distribution please refer to the following chart:

AN OUTLINE OF TIFI ORGANIZATION:

The member meeting is the summit of TIFI organization. All the members are authorized to nominate their regional representatives to attend various meetings and to elect TIFI directors. Under the member meeting it is the board of directors and the board of supervisors. The board of directors consists 9 standing directors and 18 directors. The board of supervisors consists 3 standing supervisors and 6 supervisors. All the directors and supervisors are obligated to elect the chairman and the chiefs of the boards to conduct and supervise TIFI's services.

SEVEN SUP-DIVISIONS TO SERVE THE MEMBERS:

In order to develop TIFI's services to the members all the directors and supervisors were assinged to different sub-divisions according to their specialties. The 7 sub-dividions are:
1.Finance 2.Laws and regulations
3.Promotion and exhibition 4.Price discussion and examination
5.Development of techniques 6.Intercourses and acclivities
7.Publications
FIFTEEN PRODUCT SUB-DIVISIONS TO UPGRADE COOPERATION:

Based on the ideas of better manufacturing-selling strategies and technology exchanges 15 product sub-divisions were established to link all the members to a stronger and more cooperative circle. The 15 product sub-divisions are:
1.Hex bolt and cap screws 2.Machine screws
3.Hex lag screws 4.Self-tapping screws
5.Wood screws 6.Stainless machine screws
7.Finished hex steel nuts 8.Nylon insert lock nuts
9.Stainless nuts 10.Stainless hex bolts
11.Drill point screws 12.Steel nails
13.Brass nuts 14.Thread rod
15.Key lock nuts
CONCEPTS OF TIFI'S SERVICES:

1.To carry out TIFI policies in coordination of the government policies.
2.To provide better services to the TIFI members by solving their problems.
3.To enhance TIFI's functions by taking a part of the government economic affairs.
4.To help the members with importing raw maerial to assure stable production.
5.To establish manufacturing-selling strategies for the members to secure their business interests.
6.To upgrade the members image in the international market through more international intercourses.
7.To collect the most up-to-date technologies and informations in order to reinforce the competition capability of the members in the international market.
8.To encourage research & development in order to upgrade the technology level of the fastener industry.
9.To help the members with international marketing.
10.To conduct professional activities in order to stimulate the development and efficiency of the fastener industry.

INTRODUCTION OF TAIWAN FASTENER INDUSTRY

Despite that the fastener industry is not one of the hi-tech industries it provides important foundational parts for machinery, construction, architecture, electronic, motor, electrical industries etc. The more a country gets industrialized the more fasteners it demands.

DOMESTIC ORIENTATION AT THE BEGINNING:

Taiwan set out its voyage of fastener industry right after 2nd World War. At the beginning the supply was just sufficient for domestic market. Most of the manufacturers worked with their bare hands. Just few of them imported machines from Japan for production. During vietnam war fastener business had a good chance to bloom as Taiwan was appointed to make supply to U.S. army. Manufacturers started to import low carbon material to produce small wood screws and machine screws without heat treatment. Even at that stage quantity supplied was small but the fastener industry already stood at a starting point to massive production. This change had a strong and positive impact to the competition of Taiwan fastener industry in the international market few years later.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT FOR PRODUCTION FACILITIES:

In 1973 San Shing in Taiwan succeeded development of high speed nutformer whose quality and out-put rate was even over taking some of the imported machines. This success of San Shing encouraged more developments of nutformers and boltformers. This overwhelming trend brought to Taiwan fastener industry a very solid base to the way of the name "FASTENER KINGDOM"

IMPORTANT FACTORS OF DEVELOPMENT OF TAIWAN FASTENER INDUSTRY:

There are few important factors that made fastener industry successful in Taiwan. Generally there are 3 main factors:
A.Advantages of technologies:
1.Availability of hi-tech practitioners.
2.Intensive application of computerized production facilities.
B.Advantages of costs:
1.Experienced cost control on massive production.
2.Supply of professional equipments at low cost.
3.Strong side manufactures provide good delivery and prices.
4.Quality of working force and working hours are competitive.
C.Stable material supply:
Carbon steel wire rod is supplied by the China Steel Corporation on regular basis.

DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH LEVEL PRODUCTS:

Seeing from the advantages mentioned above Taiwan is qualified for various competitions. Taiwan industry is gathering all the manufacturing technologies to upgrade to high level products so that profit and capability of research & development can be increased. We do believe that in the near future Taiwan fastener industry will take the lead of the world market.
